Timetable published for Charities Act 2016 implementation

The majority of the Act is due to be implemented in July, including the Charity Commission’s power to investigate and suspend trustees, remove disqualified trustees, and direct the winding up of a charity. Also reserve powers to control fund-raising, social investment matters.

Voluntary Voice Voting 2015 now open

As more than one Expression of Interest has been received for the representative opportunities at six Strategic Partnerships, Voluntary Voice is running a full election following the prescribed procedures. Each VCS group in Devon will have one vote for each opportunity in the election.

Anna Turley appointed Shadow Minister for Civil Society

Following the Labour Leadership election in September 2015, which saw Jeremy Corbyn become leader, new faces have appeared in the shadow cabinet including Anna Turley as shadow minister for Civil Society. Turley was elected for the first time in May 2015 and brings with her a wealth of experience has served as special adviser in the Cabinet Office with responsibility for social exclusion and the charity and voluntary sector.

The Charity Commission (England and Wales) has issued guidance for trustees on the use of tax reliefs in the management and administration of their charity. Reasonable and prudent use of the reliefs available to charities is encouraged, but "charities must not engage in or be associated with tax evasion or tax fraud".

Tough Choices Budget 2015/16 This year (2015/16) a further saving of £50 million is required as a result of the Government’s latest Comprehensive Spending Review, followed by a saving of at least £34 million in 2016/17. Update on DCC Day Services for Older People and People with Learning Disabilities

Devon County Council will no longer provide day services for older people and people with learning disabilities, expect in areas of insufficient alternative provision, following consideration of the matter at the Council's People Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 26 June, the decision is final and can be acted upon. Although the decision can now be implemented, please be assured that this will happen over a phased period of time.
